Getting Started

Before you can take your practical driving test you will need to have sucessfully passed your theory test. This comprises of two parts, thirty five multiple choice questions and a Hazard Perception test.

Since the 4th January 2000 the theory test questions have been presented on a touch screen computer and are multiple choice. You must score a total of thirty or more correct answers to pass this test. Directly after this you will take the Hazard Perception Test which comprises of fourteen video clips of approximately thirty seconds each. When the moving hazard is identified the candidate must click the mouse button. You must score at least 44 out of seventy five, one clip has two hazards on it and all the rest have one. You must pass both tests at the same time to be awarded your certificate which remains valid for two years. On completion of the test you will be told your result before you leave the test centre. Facilities exist for disabled candidates including Dyslexia and are available in many languages.

From the 3rd of September 2007 the theory test questions will increase from thirty five to fifty questions and you will need to answer forty three correctly to pass.

At South Wilts we will assist you with any part of the preparation for this test which you may feel you need and recommend suitable learning aids. We advise our pupils to begin studying for this test before you begin your practical driving lessons as information learned now will be invaluable once in the car.
